Proud To Be Pale (It Finally Paid Off)

I can remember the exact day it happened. I was in 7th grade and we had a volleyball game that night. Our coaches had given us red ribbons to put in our hair for school to raise awareness for our game. I tied mine like a headband and had the bow off to the side. Next thing I know, everyone's telling me I look like Snow White. And they were right. From my pale skin to nearly-black hair, it was a near identical match. After that day, Snow White just became my thing. I went as her for several Halloweens and was given a lot of Snow White memorabilia. During my first professional voice lesson, my teacher assigned me a Snow White song to learn. My sister even gave me a very nice silver bracelet that has "Fairest of Them All" engraved on it that I frequently wear. When I got my laptop, my brother bought me a Snow White decal to add to it. I have received countless compliments on it. My friends often call me "Princess Annie", which I quite like as well. Snow White just seems to suit me.

Yup I am this cool.

Why am I telling you all of this? You might ask. Well I heard that a local photographer was doing a project entitled "Disney University" and needed a girl who looked like Snow White for the photo shoot, I applied as fast as I could. And guess what? I was selected to be her! I've done some modeling primarily for friends who are building up their portfolios, but this is the first one that I've actually applied for. I'm excited for my upcoming shoot. If nothing else, it will be an adventure and a new experience. Which I am all about.

On another note, I used to be (well, sometimes still am) a bit self-conscious about how pale my skin is. I'm sometimes teased because of it, which isn't fun. But I've learned through the years to be proud of my paleness and to sometimes even make fun of myself for it. I know a lot of girls who tan probably way more than they should and they almost don't look real to me. I would rather be paler than the average girl and show my real skin rather than cover up who I truly am. Being pale makes me different and I like that. So I guess the takeaway message of the day is to love who you really are. Don't try to cover up your natural self, use products to enhance your inherent beauty. We all have it and need to showcase it more rather than trying to look like something we're not. If I went and got a spray tan, I would look like a different person. It wouldn't suit me. Learn what DOES suit you and show it off. Be proud of who you are and own it.

I like being pale.

Ok, girl empowerment speech over. I promise.

  1. I think that the word pale has a negative connotation. It makes us think sickly, which you are not. Using and associating more positively connotative words like fair and flawless suits you better and helps turn a negative into a positive. So, in the future, if anyone says you are pale, tell yourself they are really saying you are a fair a flawless beauty!! And you are right, we should love ourselves exactly as we are. In doing that, we shine from the inside out. xoxo

  2. Pale Pride! I was once getting a vaccination, and the nurse told me she could tell I wore sunscreen and took care of my skin because the needle went in easily (meaning that the skin of people who purposely tan was actually so leathery it made getting the needle through difficult- yikes!) I think everyone should be able to be proud of the physical characteristics that make them unique. They are a physical reminder of our ancestors.

    Congrats on the audition!
