Stopping Fat Talk

I know many people are giving their two cents on body images, the media, and "fat talk/think" because of the many ad campaigns going on. I probably am not adding much by writing this post, but you never know who might benefit from what you say.

Last night I was going through my clothes and realized that I have purchased TONS of different sizes of clothing. All of which fit me. From the same store, I own tops in a size small, medium, and large. And each of them fits me perfectly. Every article of clothing is different and is therefore going to fit you differently. Don't be ashamed to get another size from what you think you are. Don't be afraid to go and get your clothes altered to fit you better. I'm happier buying a size up that looks better on me than buying the smaller size for the sake of my ego. Did you ever see that commercial that I think Special K cereals produced where women went into a store where there were no numerical or relative sizes? The tags read things like "Radiant", "Beautiful", & "Gorgeous". While it probably isn't very realistic for retailers to implement a system like this, I wish with all my heart that this is how women interpreted their sizes. Not "Oh that's bigger than a Size 2 and is therefore too big". Don't think about the numbers. Women are beautiful at any and all sizes. Skinny isn't always desirable. Curves can be (and I think, are) gorgeous. I'm a firm believer in taking care of one's body without going overboard and being miserable, but there is only so much we can control due to genetics, bone structures, and other health conditions. Beating yourself up for wearing different sizes is NOT worth your time. I promise. You are so much better than that. Be above talking badly about yourself. It's one thing to be able to laugh at yourself, but quite another to criticize who you are, either out loud or in your head. You are better than that. You don't need that.

Start by not saying anything out loud that's negative about how you look. Then anytime you start to think a negative thought, have a phrase or image that you've selected beforehand ready to go and replace the negative thought. For every negative thought you do have about yourself, say five things you love about yourself. Over time, the negative thoughts will stop popping into your head and you will be happier.

I think talking about how women view their bodies is a healthy thing. It's important to connect with one another and realize that even supermodels have insecurities and that what you see in magazines and advertisements, simply is not real and that beauty doesn't come in a cookie-cutter shape. The most beautiful women, in my opinion, are the ones who are true to themselves. Ones who use makeup and clothes to enhance their natural selves, not to cover up or pretend to be someone else. I truly believe that there are as many different kinds of beauty as there are women in the world. With that being said, I'm not perfect. I criticize my body. There are things I don't love. But I'm working on it. I'm trying to embrace how I look and focus on the things I love about myself. I'm trying to be grateful that I HAVE a body, that I can walk, see, sing, dance, run, hug my loved ones, kiss my husband, and taste delicious food. I'm not completely there yet, but I'm working on it. And I hope you will too.

Love yourself. Be happy. You are beautiful. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
